Caving is about real adventure and exploration, it is about going where no one has gone before, exploring a landscape where your light is the first light to shine in a world that formed before mankind existed on this planet. In NZ we are only just scatching the surface of the potential discoveries.

Cave exploration in New Zealand

These pages are devoted to my favorite topic...Cave Exploration.

Despite having two caves now over 1000 metres deep and one cave over 70 kilometres long we have only just scatched the surface for cave exploration in this country. There are still hundreds of acres of Alpine Karst to prospect, areas in the Martiri that have only recieved quick looks by cavers, the west coast has still got potential for more big discoveries and so to do those areas that have been looked at for years...Waitomo, Port Waikato, Waipu and Puketiti.

The future looks very exciting for us all and ocnsideirng there are not many cavers in this country we all have the potential to all be involved on something that is world class.

For those wanting to get involved in the big Alpine Expeditions; each year around New Year there is an expedition to Bulmer Cavern, our longest cvae system. Keep an ear open for expeditions to the Ellsi Basin and to Nettlebed and Stormy Pot.

There is also cave diving; in this country we have huge potential for discoveries beyond sumps. Even though most of our dive sites are very hard to get to, the rewards will be I am sure very big.

Keep an eye out on the Wellington cavers and their discoveries at Martinborough, they are finding a lot of small, fun and sporty caves in the southern end of the Waiarapa. NSG is spending time over in the Mt Arthur table lands and have been exploring major cave systems not far from the Salisbury Hut. CCG now have a new up market caving base in Charleston which is an excellent place to stay while puruisng leads in the west coast bush.

So get out there and explore...drop me a line from time to time and let me know how you get on.
